The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County is excited to announce dates for its 2010 Green Living workshops.  Plus, the District has added a newly developed workshop for 2010, Rain Barrels!

All classes will be held from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Pre-registration is needed to receive workshop materials.

There is a $10 fee for presentation costs except for Rain Barrels, which will be $20.

Composting Workshop

Composting offers a unique opportunity to contribute to and directly benefit from part of the solid waste solution: recycling. It also results in a rich soil amendment great for gardening purposes.

Participants in the Home Composting workshop will take home a sturdy backyard compost bin and a handy guidebook to backyard composting.

Healthy Home Workshop

Learn what it takes to turn your house into a Healthy Home by using environmentally friendly products to clean-up. This workshop will focus on the hazards of Household Hazardous Wastes (HHW); along with alternatives that will still get the job done.

Participants in the Healthy Home workshop will receive a starter kit of green cleaning supplies to test.

 

The 4 R’s Waste Reduction Workshop

This workshop gives you the means to be a ‘greener’ citizen by practicing waste reduction the four R way: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & RETHINK. Learn the rules of recycling, see photos of the recycling process in action, discover the proper way to dispose of those hard to get rid of items and gain resources to help you reduce waste in the first place. Participants will receive a reusable bag and other ‘green’ items.

Rain Barrel Workshop

Rain Barrels are an efficient, low cost method for collecting rainwater.  The rain barrels are placed at a downspout to capture rainwater to use for many purposed, like watering a garden, houseplant, or washing your car.  Attend this workshop and receive knowledge of the benefits of rain barrels, how to use them, as well as proper location and installation. You will also receive a rain barrel with spigot and a linking and overflow fitting.

Time: 6- 7pm
Cost: $20 for presentation costs.

  • Pre-registration and advance payment is required.
  • Payment must be received to reserve your spot.  Each workshop is limited to 50 participants.

More Info:

  • This workshop is restricted to Porter County Residents Only, one barrel per household!
  • Brown or Terra Cotta Barrels will be available on a first come first serve basis
  • Please attend the workshop in a vehicle large enough to bring home your new 50 gallon rain barrel!

Roof Top Volume Calculations:

Length x Width = number of square feet

  • 20 ft x 25 ft =500 square feet

Translates to cubic feet of 1' depth; Design for 1" Rain

 

Number of square feet/12" per foot

 

  • 500 square feet/ 12" per foot = 42 cubic feet
7.5 gallons per cubic foot
  • 42 x 7.5 = 315 gallons of water!
